QUICK NOTES… Doing something new can be scary and walking on to a martial arts floor for the first time is no exception. Whether you are an adult or a child your first class will likely be filled with preconceived expectations about what the class will be like. The key to getting the most out of the experience is to let go and ’empty your cup so that you can taste the new tea’. Walking out on the floor with an open mind will let you experience everything from a experiential perspective and you will get more out of it.
Before your first class talk with the instructor and make sure you know what to wear (usually loose fitting clothes will suffice), know the school’s etiquette, and how to address the teachers. This little bit of preparation will make you more comfortable and make it easier to fit in to the new environment. Once you are on the floor relax and focus on what is being taught. Good instructors will explain what they want from you and great instructors will make the experience both fun and informative.
Expect to be a little sore the next day from using muscles that you don’t usually engage. Take a cue from the previous days class and stretch a little. This should make most of the soreness fade away. Now that the first class is over, the subsequent ones will feel less intimidating. Martial arts classes are just the vehicle you use to navigate an amazing journey. Take the time to enjoy the ride.
