QUICK NOTES…People train in martial arts for a number of reasons. The why is as complex and as diverse as the student body. It doesn’t matter if the reason is self-defense, fitness, character development, or something else. Each person chooses to start their journey with a specific goal in mind.
It is a good idea to have a physical from a qualified physician before beginning a training regime to make sure you can do it safely and get the most out of the experience. Make sure you make your instructors aware of any potential health issues or limitations prior to beginning training.
Next take a moment figure out your ‘why’. Once you figure out why you want to start research local options that fit with the outcomes you want to accomplish. Take the time to learn about your local schools and the qualifications of the individuals who will potentially be teaching you.
Once you have chosen a school/gym, be realistic. Set your training regime based on your physical health and goals. Almost no one starts their training at the fitness level they want to achieve during their journey.
Last but not least, enjoy yourself. Training can be one of the most satisfying and enjoyable experiences of your life if you let it.
