QUICK NOTES…. The short answer is that martial arts can help with weight loss. The long answer is more complicated. Each person’s weight loss journey is different. A number of factors including health, age, weight, and level of fitness will play into the equation.
Before beginning any weight loss program it is important to discuss your health and options with your health care provider and/or dietician. They will be able to give you a starting point with some basic goals, how much to exercise, and what your daily caloric intake should be.
If weight loss is your goal is important to monitor both the caloric value of the foods you are taking in and their health value. (i.e. carbs, proteins, fats, etc.) Educating yourself on healthy eating is a great first step.
On the other side of the spectrum is exercise. Health experts at the CDC recommend a minimum of 150 minutes of activity per week for adults and 60 minutes of activity a day for children to maintain health. A study published by the American Journal of Physiology seems to indicate that exercising at least 30 minutes a day is as effective as exercising 60 minutes for a weight loss program. So the length of the workout is less important than the type of workout paired with the food you are eating.
Most metrics seem to indicate that a caloric reduction of 500 calories a day is a good way to lose weight. This can be accomplished through a reduction of food intake and increasing exercise. Not all martial arts classes are taught with the same intensity. The average person burns 475-575 calories per hour at slower pace martial arts. Moderate pace martial arts will burn 750-900 calories per hour. Depending on the class you take and your level of fitness you will probably fall at the lower end of the scale when you first start.
Make sure you discuss your goals and health concerns when you start a new class with the instructor. They will be able to help guide you in your journey to achieve your goals.
