QUICK NOTES…Choosing the right martial arts school for you or your child can seem daunting. There are so many schools to choose from. If you don’t know martial arts or what you are looking for the task can seem impossible.
Whittle down your choices by looking at the different styles of marital arts and what types of techniques they teach. Are you looking for a stand up art (TaeKwon-Do, Karate, Kempo), a grappling art (Jujitsu, Judo), or one that focuses on self-defense (Hapkido, Krav Maga)? Understanding a little bit about the different arts will help you narrow your search.
On-line reputation is important, but it is only one aspect of what you should be researching. Make sure you take the time to look into the school and instructors. Do they have a good reputation in the community? Are they recognized for collaboration with community partners? Are they certified by any reputable body to teach the arts they have available at their schools? Where are they mentioned besides their own website and social media?
Is price a factor? If you are on an extremely tight budget then you are probably looking for program rather than a school. Check out local YMCA’s and community centers for different options. Most commercial schools will run within $50 per month of each other and since price is subjective .. there is no such thing as a universal good deal. Some schools will be higher and some will be lower. Most schools that have the ability will offer different packages to clients that meet different needs from al’a carte plans to all inclusive ones. What potential students/parents need to decide is does the price seem to be in line with what is being offered and taught at the school.
Last but not least, take a moment and do a trial (or drop in) at a school that you are considering. It is important that you and the school/instructors share the same philosophies and goals.
