QUICK NOTES…Self-Defense skills are perishable. Like most physical endeavors they require repetition and competent instruction for proficiency. To be clear a martial arts class is not a self-defense class, nor is a self-defense class martial arts. There are commonalities and cross-over skill sets to be sure, but the two classes have slightly different end goals and teaching methodologies.
Let’s look at a basic self-defense class first…
Self-defense classes vary in methodology but a common theme running through them is an end date. Specific skill sets are taught to counter targeted forms of aggression. They are short, to the point, and easy to learn. The best classes focus on gross motor skill development, understanding the concepts of relative positioning, and environmental factors. Before attending a self-defense class it is important to understand the instructor’s background and real world experience. All self-defense classes are not created equal and it is important to understand the focus of the classes curriculum before jumping on board. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking questions before you sign up for a class. Ask about course goals, expected outcomes, and know the instructors qualifications before signing up.
And now martial arts …
Martial arts classes generally have no set time limit and while self-defense is a part of most curriculums it is not all that is taught. Traditionally taught classes focus on self-improvement through focus, confidence, and physical skill development. The training is generally intense an art mastery comes in years rather than a few classes. Given that martial arts classes are on-going students are generally more prepared for an unexpected encounter than self-defense only students. Muscle memory often kicks in before the aggressive actions are consciously clocked by the martial artist. Although no art or skill set is infallible, martial artists are generally more prepared in these situations than non-martial artists.
