OBW is a dojang where everyone is welcomed and embraced for what makes them unique and what makes them strong. I trained here during the brief time I spent living in Omaha and never felt more at home in a city so different from where I’m from. GM Helaney and all the teaching staff are great at creating a learning environment that is both productive and fun. I enjoyed how concept-focused their teaching style is; it helped me learn faster and truly understand effective self defense strategies. I’m a former TKD practitioner now in my late 40s who was looking for a different type of martial art to try.  I decided to try Hapkido at Omaha Blue Waves and I am more than happy with my decision.  Grandmaster Helaney and his family are extremely knowledgeable and have a wealth of experience and Mr. Humphrey is an excellent instructor.  The Hapkido group is very welcoming and always happy to help practice a technique or concept.  I have arthritic knees and that has not been a hindrance to this point as I look forward to continuing in hopes of achieving a black belt one day. We held our son’s 5th birthday party here in Dec. 2022. I had been looking for something a little different for a party, as we have been to several kids’ parties at BounceU and SkyZone. I spoke with Jeff and Michele and they told me about what they offered for a 1.5 hour party; but that I could also customize it. They honestly understated the experience; it was an amazing birthday party and my son and his friends had a blast. Many of the kids who came had not tried martial arts before so a few were hesitant, but most jumped right into the mini martial arts class that started off the party. One thing that blew me away was the number of staff they had there for the party. I had expected 1-2 but there were 4-5 staff members there to assist in teaching the kids. The staff was clearly very good working with kids as they were quite patient when some were running around. The parents also loved how Jeff and Michele could get the kids to be quiet and listen! :) there were many other aspects of this experience that were great; I could go on and on. But I will end with saying, I had researched other martial arts facilities for parties and this was the only one I saw that let every kid at the party have a chance to break a board (as opposed to just the birthday kid). Our son has found a great team of leaders at Blue Waves to help guide him. Not only in Taekwondo but in learning skills like respect, dedication, hardwork, time managerment, helping without being asked, and making healthy eating choices. As a parent sometimes they don't want to listen to us. Its been such a great resource/outlet for our son! I've been with this as I'd call family for 15 years now as a student and then became an instructor not to long ago. They are great people that do amazing things. Martial Arts is a different experience that I believe everyone should have the chance to do.
