What is Kumdo?

QUICK NOTES … Kumdo, also known as Gumdo, is a Korean martial art that focuses on the use of a sword. The word “Kumdo” translates to “the way of the sword” and is derived from the Japanese term “Kendo.” Kumdo is based on traditional Korean swordsmanship, as well as Japanese and Chinese sword fighting techniques.

In Kumdo, practitioners wear protective gear and use bamboo swords, called “jukdo,” to strike targets on their opponent’s body. The strikes are designed to simulate the use of a real sword in combat, while minimizing the risk of injury.

Kumdo places a strong emphasis on discipline, focus, and mental clarity, as well as physical conditioning and technique. Practitioners strive to develop the physical strength, speed, and precision required to effectively wield a sword, while also cultivating the mental focus and control necessary to execute precise strikes and avoid counterattacks.

Kumdo is often practiced as a competitive sport, with tournaments held at the local, regional, and national levels. However, many practitioners also view Kumdo as a form of self-cultivation, and use it as a means of developing their physical and mental abilities, as well as their spiritual growth.
